Henry J. Austin Health Center (HJA) has served as the major non-hospital based comprehensive primary care provider for the Greater Trenton Area for over 40 years. HJA began as an operation of the City of Trenton in 1969, and in 1986 was incorporated as a non profit 501( c ) 3 corporation. The main site is located within walking distance of State Capital Buildings, HJA’s comprehensive primary medical and dental services are accessible to the City’s over 88,000 residents.

Trenton’s residents are of widely diverse cultural, ethnic and racial backgrounds and are geographically divided along those same lines.  The trend has been for younger residents to move to the suburbs for better opportunities and escape crime, drugs and other social problems, leaving behind and older and poorer population.

Utilizing the Life Cycle Concept, HJA’s services include: gynecology (obstetrics are referred to Capital Health); pediatrics; family practice medicine (including adolescent health care); internal and adult medicine; fast track care; podiatry;  behavioral health; social services; eye care; pharmacy; phlebotomy; translation; transportation and other ancillary services. HJA is especially known for its outstanding dental services and recently renovated its dental operatories with state of the art equipment.

HJA participates with four managed care programs and provides services to over 18,000 patients, who generate over 80,000 patient visits annually. Services are provided at Austin’s main site at 321 North Warren Street, and at its two satellite facilities located at 112 Ewing Street and 317 Chambers Street.

Hypertension, diabetes mellitus, asthma and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are among the most common diagnoses. HJA serves as the major HIV Counseling and Testing Center in  the City of Trenton. Hepatitis C testing, counseling and treatment services are also provided. Women’s health services are provided a Certified Nurse Mid Wife, with Gynecological back up from Capital Health System.
